Barangay Profile – Katipunan
History / Creation of the Barangay
Barangay Katipunan was a sitio before of Barrio Dayawan of the Municipality of Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. The founder of Katipunan was late Barrio Kapitan Placido Ermac, who is a migrant to this place and hails from Iligan City. The old name of this Barangay was Sitio Tag-anga. With his untiring effort and his co-founders, Barrio Dayawan as a mother Barangay gave her blessings that this Barangay became distinct and separate Barangay and pursuant to Resolution No. 567, Series of 1972, by the Provincial Board of Misamis Oriental, Barrio Katipunan was created on July 17, 1972. Katipunan was named after the place where Barrio Kapitan Ermac came from somewhere in Iligan City.

This Barangay covers 150 hectares with plain terrain. Upon creation, it is purely agricultural but land use presently are as follows : Industrial use – 25%, Residential use – 28%, Commercial use – 5%, Agricultural – 15% and Open space – 7%.
Distance to Major Points
Barangay Katipunan has a distance of 1.0 kilometer away from Barangay Poblacion and 25 kilometers away from Cagayan de Oro City. The Barangay Hall is located 250 meters away from the national highway.
Today, Barangay Katipunan is the heart of industrialization of the municipality of Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. To mention business establishments that made this place industrial are: Philippine Sinter Corporation, Coca-cola FEMSA Philippines, Inc., Limketkai Manufacturing Corporation, Mindanao Container Corporation, Superior Gas and Equipment, Co. (SUGECO), Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc., Solane and CDO Pinoy {Snacks} Corporation.
Economy and Livelihood
Majority of the populace are construction and production workers, some are engaged in small scale business, others are professional and overseas contract workers, while there are some who still engaged in farming.
General Health Condition
Mortality rate as of September 2018 was decrease and the causes were; pulmonary tubercolosis, diabetes mellitus type 2, chronic obstruction pulmonary disease, micro cardial infraction and vehicle accident.
Morbidity rate as of September 2018 has remained on the same range with upper respiratory tract infection leads, followed by urinary tract infection, asthma, hypertension, diabetes, skin lesions, wounds, animal bites, epigastric pain and loose watery stool which comprise the top 10.
Culture and Values
Population of Barangay Katipunan is broken down as follows : due to industrialization only 20% are native of this barangay, while 80% are Cebuano, Tagalog, Ilongo, Boholano etc. The largest religious denomination of the barangay is the Roman Catholic which is 90% of the population while the other 10% are Born Again Christians, Seventh Day Adventist, Iglesia ni Cristo and other non catholic denominations.
Disaster History
In any typhoon that visits our locality, High Flooding confronts us always.
Last November 2012, Typhoon Pablo hits particularly Zone 2 and Zone 3 especially residential houses along the creek bank. There were houses partially damaged, corn farms, pig fences, live stocks (pigs and poultry) and backyard gardens were washed out.
There was a flash flood last June 12, 2013 that hits Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 3 and Zone4, with same damages.
Other threats to the Barangay include some areas where prone to fire as the residential houses are near the petroleum depot. Landslide as a result of rain water coming from Barangay Balacanas on the hill top and Purok 2 of Zone 4 of this barangay is mostly affected

Social Services
Education
The only barangay in the municipality with no elementary school considering that the location of Vicente N. Chaves Memorial Central School (VNCMCS) is only one (1) kilometer away and it is accessible due to presence of motorized sikad as the common means of transporration in the barangay. As the barangay is composed of four (4) zones, so in every zone there is presence of one (1) Day Care Center, now presently called Child Development Center.
Although health programs are transparently catered to the constituents of the barangay, the Municipal Health Center through the Barangay Health Station is catering services like immunization, vaccination, maternal care, lying in center and other health services.

Agruculture
Eight (8) households only in the barangay are engaged in crop production while five in vegetable gardening. DA provides crop seeds for loan.
There is thirty (30) households engaged in live stock production while poultry production has 10 households.
Infrastructure
Road and Bridges
- The Barangay has a total area of 150 hectares linked by roads/barangay streets of 4,000 meters more or less.
- The road is connected by concreted Tag-anga bridge of Zone 3 Katipunan connecting Zone 4, Katipunan.
Water Supply
- The total households of Katipunan is 2,435 and on which 2,205 are served in Level 3 water connections while 230 only in Level 2 is equivalent to 90.55% and 9.45% respectively.
Communications
- Communication facilities are not the problem of the barangay due to presence of two (2) towers of Globe Telecommunications.
Solid Waste Management
- The economic growth resulting from the influx of industries in the area has brough about changes in the lifestyle and consumption pattern of the people of Villanueva. Residual wastes from the waste assessment and characterization study shows that they are generally comprise of single use or low density plastics and diapers.
- The barangay is capable of producing 5,000 kilograms per day of wastes more or less, which when left unattended and unmanaged will end up as liters in streets and shoreline areas.
- Garbage collection is daily by zones. Waste segregation at source is implemented. All collection points are easily accessed by collection vehicle such as public places, market, commercial centers and few households that are able to place their waste in it.
Air Quality
- Air quality monitoring is constantly checked by third party auditors considering that the barangay has no capable equipment that can detect the parameters for air quality. As an industrial area, the barangay is dependent on the sampling points of STEAG and Philippine Sinter Corporation on the data gathered. This sampling usually done monthly by the accredited environmental samplers.
Financial Management
- Though the area of Barangay is only 150 hectares but our population is 7,349 more or less, on which the IRA depends. The more population the higher IRA is allocated to the barangay. Our local collection is more than 5% of our IRA allotment. As of Calendar years 2017, 2018 and 2019 are P3,676,000.00, P4,419,700.00 and P4,870,000.00 respectively
- 45% of the financial capacity of Barangay Katipunan is focused of the social, economic, infrastructure and environmental projects, programs and activities.
